Help Homeowners Plan for Winter Comfort: Add IAQ to Your Fall Maintenance Visit

When homeowners prepare for winter, their first question is often whether the heat will work. A fall maintenance visit is a good time to ask what else they want from their home’s comfort.

Was the air uncomfortably dry last winter? Did bedrooms feel stuffy? Was dust a recurring frustration?

These questions can help contractors bring indoor air quality into the conversation before those concerns return. As P&N Distribution highlights IAQ this October, consider using your maintenance visits to help customers build a practical plan for the season ahead.

Look Back Before Planning Ahead

Start by asking: “Besides temperature, what would you have liked to improve about your home last winter?”

That question lets homeowners describe their priorities in familiar terms. Follow up by asking which rooms were affected, how often they noticed the issue, and what they tried.

Their answers provide context for your evaluation. They also help you avoid spending time explaining products that do not address the customer’s main concern.

Explain the Different Pieces of Indoor Air Quality

Homeowners may think one air-cleaning product can address every concern. A brief explanation can help set realistic expectations.

– Filtration helps capture airborne particles and must be compatible with the HVAC system.

– Humidity control addresses moisture conditions, with recommendations based on what the home needs.

– Ventilation brings outdoor air into the picture and deserves consideration when evaluating stale or stuffy spaces.

– Supplemental air cleaning may be appropriate for specific concerns, depending on the technology and application.

Addressing pollutant sources is also an important part of the process. Explain how your findings inform the recommendation rather than presenting equipment as a universal fix.

Make Existing IAQ Equipment Part of the Visit

Some homeowners already have IAQ accessories but may not know how to maintain them.

Ask about existing media filters, humidifiers, air-cleaning equipment, and ventilation systems. Where applicable to your service scope, review their condition and explain the manufacturer’s maintenance requirements.

This gives customers a clearer picture of what they already own—and whether the next step is maintenance, further evaluation, or an upgrade.

Offer a Plan They Can Understand

You do not need to recommend several improvements at once.

Start with the homeowner’s priority and your findings. Explain the proposed next step, its expected benefit, its limitations, and its cost. Include ongoing maintenance so the customer understands the commitment beyond installation.

If multiple improvements are appropriate, help them understand the order in which to consider them. A clear plan makes the decision more manageable.
